Erect A Spiritual Firewall

The battle for our minds and hearts is real and ongoing. Have you ever been ambushed by spontaneous impure thoughts — thoughts that undermine your faith? Lots, of distracting thoughts, sometimes infiltrate our minds, especially when we’re praying or contemplating God’s Word. I ask myself are they my thoughts or are they the strategic mind games of an oppressive offensive by the enemy attempting to sabotage my psyche, envelope me in false guilt and shame, and hinder my devotion to loving the Lord with all my heart and mind? 

In scripture, Paul says that the only way to counter, confront, and combat enemy mind games are for us to recondition our minds by focusing on wholesome thoughts, and ultimately, on the irrefutable truth of God’s Word. Interestingly, Scripture uses the words hearts and minds interchangeably — reflecting an intentional intimate connection that the mind is the gateway to, and the battleground for, the heart. The devil employs psychological guerrilla warfare on Christ-followers who aspire to sanctify their hearts and minds — hindering their thriving faith walk. 

Today like Paul, I advise you to protect, fortify, and recondition your mind with a spiritual firewall. Daily and prayerfully strive to sanctify a sound mind fully devoted to purity by taking “captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Throughout the day ask the Spirit to make you sensitive to any lie or ungodly thought you begin to entertain. Invite him to turn your eyes fully on Christ so that your thoughts are filled with worship as you go from task to task. 

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things.” Philippians 4.8

Yahweh, thank you for your faithfulness. Father, help me to recognize the enemy’s mind games. Give me the strength to counter, confront, and combat the devil’s mind games by erecting a spiritual firewall. God help me to avoid toxic media and immerse myself in your Word and take every thought captive in obedience to you. In Christ’s name Amen! 

Time To Change Your Mind 

When was the last time you changed your mind? Maybe it was when you changed your outfit a couple of times this morning. Maybe it was changing your mind on your mail just after the waitress took your order. Maybe it was changing your mind about the perfect birthday or Christmas gift for a friend. Changing your mind over clothes, food, and gifts is not life-changing but there is a circumstance when changing your mind is powerful. 

Paul says, “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God and take every thought captive to obey Christ”. In other words, we need to change our minds when our thoughts do not align with God’s truth. There are times when a lie from the enemy spins in our minds and the thought patterns wage war within us to keep us from living in the victory of Christ. The process to change thought is to replace the lie with the truth. 

4 Reasons to change your mind: 

Change your mind from the thought of defeat to “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). 

Change your mind from the thought of no value to “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:13-14). 

Change your mind from fear and failure to “the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in me” (Romans 8:11). 

Change your mind from pity to “I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us” (Romans 8:18). 

Today, as believers, we have the power to change our minds through Christ! Next time you change your fast-food order be reminded of how quickly that change happened. Changing your mind to the truth of Christ will allow you to live in the freedom He so freely gives.

Jehovah, my God, I know that I will battle my sinful nature as long as I live. Recently, that battle is in my mind. I am begging for You to quiet all voices except Your own. Let Your voice be as clear as the birds singing at dawn. Place a wall around me and fight for my mind as I seek to follow after You. I surrender my all to You. Amen. 

Wisdom Wednesday

In the 25 years I've travelled I have always taken out travel insurance but never had to make a claim. That was until this trip. I have been tested to the limit and it is still not over. As I write, I am at a hotel in Washington Dulles after missing my flight back to the UK.

My thoughts are... 'Lord, are you with me because I can't see how you are in this and I'm struggling to trust you.' 
I feel guilty for even thinking this... my faith should be strong, after all I'm a Pastor?
 
Yet I have to be honest in this moment. I can’t pretend when all the while God knows my heart. Even as I write, He is providing a fresh revelation of Himself to me. 

Jesus becomes the author of our faith as He initiates powerful promises that challenge us to trust in Him. Our faith is developed as we choose to trust His promises daily. When we trust Him we learn that He is a God of His word. A God who will never break His promise. All we are required to do is trust Him in whatever circumstance. - Pastor Sophia

Thank you so much for your prayers yesterday. I've just arrived back safely. 

But let me share with you what happened after I texted you my devotional... I decided to wear my 'Purpose' T-shirt. As I was going through the airport I noticed that people were reading the print, some even made comments and we were able to strike up a conversation. 

My faith throughout the day was strengthened and it began with being honest about where I was. Not only that... your prayers and the promises, power and presence of God made the difference. 

The biting point of transformation is where honesty meets the Jesus who is the truth, the life and the way.

The Battle for the Mind 

10 Scriptures That Remind Us We Are Showered in Grace

In my book “Transforming Your Mind In 30 Days,” I allude to the fact, that there is a battle going on for control of your mind. Heaven and earth intersect there, and both spheres influence your thinking. God created us with the capacity to experience the foretastes of heaven, but we must somehow shut out the world and focus on His presence in order to experience it. 

The world has a downward pull on our thoughts. Media bombards us with greed, lust, and cynicism. We must pray for protection and discernment over our minds. We must stay in continual communication with God as we walk through the wastelands of this world. 

We must refuse to worry because this will weigh us down and block awareness of His presence. We must remain on guard, stay alert and recognize the battle being waged against our minds as we look forward to an eternity free of strife-free living reserved for us in heaven. 

Paul reminds us that the mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace. John says do not love the world or anything in the world because the world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. 

Today how are you doing in your battle for your mind? Who is winning …? the way of the world (satan) or the way of heaven (God)? Electronic communications, the media, and the grip of Satan on the world around us makes this a fierce battle and even more difficult for those not grounded in the Word of God. It is daily. It is constant, but for those of us who have professed Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we know God will win in the end in the battle for our minds. Hallelujah! 

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. “ Romans 12:2 

Let’s Pray 

Yahweh my God of Comfort, I am seeking tranquillity for my mind. As I pray and meditate upon Your Word, my mind often drifts to my to-do lists and needs. I pause now from my day. I breathe out a deep sigh from within my soul and ask, will You please quiet my negative thoughts? Help me remember all Your goodness to me. Deliver me from anxiety and the battle that rages for control of my mind. In Christ’s name Amen. 

Control Your Tongue

I believe every word we speak has power. Have you ever said things you wish you could take back? Our words determine the direction of our lives. The Bible tells us that life and death are in the power of the tongue.

There’s no neutral ground. We are either sowing seeds of life and productivity with our words, or we are sowing seeds of ruin and destruction with our words. This is a good day to take inventory of your words and make the decision to sow only good seeds with your words.

Today, speak God’s Word over your own life and the lives of those around you. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you to consider every word before you say it. Make the decision today that your words will bring glory to the Lord. As you guard your mouth, you will “keep” your life. You’ll see an increase in every area and enjoy the blessings God has in store for you!

“He who guards his mouth keeps his life, but he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.” (Proverbs 13:3, AMP)

Yahweh, I give this day to You. I give You my every thought, I give You every word and action. Spirit, help me to live a life pleasing to God in every way. Please help me speak words of blessing to edify those around me. In Christ’s Name! Amen.

The State of the Union 

Each year the President delivers to Congress the annual State of the Union Message and across America governors of their respective states deliver their State of the State messages to the various legislatures. Its purpose is to summarize the status of various things throughout the land and to make a change, for the chief executive to suggest legislative action…  

I sat and watched the president give his state of the union message not too long ago. He started by saying that the state of our union is strong. He cited several achievements during his administration and glossed over several storms.  

Today, what it would be like if God had come to the podium and delivered His state of the union message. I’ll bet he wouldn’t hold anything back or not tell it like it is. 

I wonder what he would single out first. Perhaps he would talk about the rampant proliferation of pornography. Certainly, he would mention rampant sexual immorality. Maybe he would remind us that we are about to enter a post-Christian era as we have turned our back on Him. He would give reference to tolerance ‘which says we must tolerate the beliefs of others and not thrust ours upon them. He would challenge us to be bold in speaking of our faith. He would talk about a watered down feel good’ theology and modern preaching that de-emphasizes the salvation message. He might remind us that we seem to have forgotten Him while focusing our attention on ourselves and our hedonistic pleasures. Maybe He would talk about sexual disorientation rampant across our land. He would paint a grim prognosis for the land if its people do not return to him. Certainly, He would quote from Revelation. 

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:33-34

Yahweh, there are many opponents to Christians in the world today. Father, help me to have a healthy spiritual state and keep in the forefront of my mind that I am in a war, not against flesh and blood, but against the evil powers of the spiritual realm. Please God Embolden me to be a formidable soldier for You and join in the battle to fight for You. Clothe me in the Armor of God and energize my spirit. Make me bold. Make me strong. In Christ’s name Amen. 

Seek God’s Purpose

God has a purpose and plan for each of our lives. The greatest thing we can do is to find that purpose and live it out. We can trust his purpose in us because it is based on his wisdom and love. If we seek His will, we’re not going to do anything that can ultimately spoil His purpose in us.  

Today, we may at times stray from the perfect path God wants us to travel, but we never totally get off the main path. As long he does not abandon us, and He won’t. He promised he would never leave us nor forsake us He will use us for His purposes. Despite our sins and shortcomings. 

“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; Your love, O Lord, endures forever — do not abandon the works of Your hands.” Psalm 138:8

Yahweh, help me discern what my life is intended to fulfil. Father, thank you for loving me and promising to walk beside me every step of my life. God, I live trusting that you will never forsake me no matter what. In Christ’s name. Amen. 

Life’s Greatest Purpose 

One of my most inspirational stories is that of Nick Vujicic born without arms and legs determined to find the purpose for his life. Against his tremendous challenges, he has become an international motivational speaker, who founded his own company and speaks about his ridiculously good life which has no Limits. He says, “recognizing your purpose means everything. I assure you that you too have something to contribute. You may not see it now, but you would not be on this planet if that were not true. I know for certain that God does not make mistakes, but he does make miracles. I am one. You are too.’ (Life Without Limits) 

A seventeenth-century monk, who lived in France, saw his work for God as serving in the kitchen. He would stop his work and praise God for the privilege of knowing Him and serving Him in this way. He is still serving God through his book ‘Practicing the Presence of God.’ 

Today, be faithful in small things. Mother Teresa says, “No work is small when done with great love.” Your greatest purpose for living is to serve God. He has work for you to do. The scripture says, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge, nor wisdom.” Ecclesiastes 9:10 

“We are God’s workmanship (masterpiece) created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God has prepared (chosen) for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10) 

Yahweh, I thank you that my life has a purpose. Father, I want to live my life for your glory. God, I’m willing and available to serve you no matter the consequences. In Christ’s Name Amen.

**Wisdom Wednesday’s** Trust In The Lord With All Your Heart

God is the Master Orchestrator. He really understands everyone of his instruments in detail.

Yesterday, I had the amazing opportunity to spend time in Kingston Jamaica with a friend I only met this April at a conference. 

When we met we realised very quickly how much we had in common and had a deep sense that God had a special purpose for our connection. We didn't speak about our holiday plans back in April yet God had impressed on our hearts separately that we needed to be in Jamaica during the month of July. 

So He orchestrated the rhythms of iur lives to cross. Yesterday was a day like no other, we laughed, shopped till we dropped, ate good Jamaican food and discovered really cool hang out spots with my cousins. It was a day the manuscript of our souls. I saw how God composed the major and minor chords of my vacation into a sweet lullaby.

**Wisdom Wednesday's** This bible text speaks so clearly to the power we have to govern our own thoughts. The truth is our thoughts are one of the most powerful tools we have. Our thoughts can create something beautiful or cause death. Our thoughts direct our feels, our actions and our behaviour. 

How much time do we spend thinking about what or how we are thinking? I challenge you to take sometime each week to reflect how you are thinking about yourself, God, others and life. 

I'd also encourage you to use this Scripture as a guide for your thoughts.

I believe this text can help us govern our thoughts in a positive way to bring about life, love, joy and creativity.

**Wisdom Wednesday’s** Cast All Your ANXIETY On Him Because He Cares For You

Did you know that you can throw your worries, concerns and issues at God? 

It's true, whatever challenges you maybe going through right now, no matter the complexity, whether it just happened or you contributed to it. The Bible says 'Cast your anxiety on Him'. The word 'cast' means literally to throw or fling. So we can throw our issues in the direction of God. Notice what happens...  you release it and no longer hold it. Instead, you let it go into the hands of Our Father who is able to do exceedingly abundantly far above all what we can ever ask or think. He can handle it. 

We can do this with full confidence knowing that Our Father cares for us. He loves us, His intentions are good towards us and He is able to cause all things - the good the bad and the ugly - to work for our good.

The Purpose of Trials

“Take up your cross and follow me,” Christ said. We shouldn’t expect the Christian life to be easy and comfortable because believers aren’t exempt from trials. Becoming a Christian may result in increased trouble and suffering. Peter refers to such hardship as a “fiery ordeal,” and tells us not to be surprised by it. God uses our suffering for His purpose, and He walks through it with us. Hope during affliction is possible when we understand what God is achieving in the situation. Here are four reasons the Christian may go through trials. 

1.     The heavenly Father sometimes uses painful experiences to purify us. Trials drive us to the Lord and open our eyes to sins that we have tolerated. His discipline is not designed to crush us but to produce “the peaceful fruit of righteousness” (Hebrews 12:11). 

2.     God uses suffering to display his power. Trials humble us by revealing our weaknesses (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). They teach us to depend on the Lord for the power to persevere and mature 

3.     Our suffering has eternal benefits. Earthly affliction “is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison” (2 Corinthians 4:17). 

4.     The Lord at times allows difficulty as a way of testing us. His goal is to produce increased faith, endurance, and devotion to Him. Rather than complaining, we should exult in our tribulations, knowing that they are producing proven character within us (Romans 5:3-4). 

Today, be encouraged and view your next trial from God’s perspective. Though you may not feel it at the time, the Lord is with you. He is your hope and sufficiency. 

12 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; 13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. 14 If you are [a]reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. [b]On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. 1 Peter 4:12-14 

Let’s Pray 

Yahweh, as I go through the trials of life, help me to realize that you are always with me in all things; that I have no secrets from you; and that your loving grace enfolds me for eternity. In the security of your embrace,  in Christ’s name Amen.
