• Don Ruhl Savage Street Church of Christ I have never understood the antagonism toward the word, "Religion." It appears in James 1. It merely means to bind back, which is what we seek, we want to be bound back to God through the Lord Jesus Christ.
    • John DW Macdonald I agree with the real meaning and this can be quoted but people object validly to the institutionalisation. Personally I perceive a spiritual virus throughout the foundations of the churches ever since Costantine turned the pagan churches overnight into "Christian" Churches and making Christianity a career move as opposed to a persecuted but living entity/ Power has corrupted and this is what people object to in the word rather than the real meaning you rightly identify!
    • Michael Snow And anyone who has read the heroes of the faith through the centuries will see "true religion" lifted up, again and again. Part of the problem is that modern Christians do not heed C.S. Lewis advice on reading.
As you and Connie remarked below, it is a 'both/and" not an "either/or." Elton Trueblood wrote of the "holy conjunction" as referenced in the Introduction (see the "Look Inside" feature) here:
  • Connie Rossini Four Waters Press I call it both.
    • Don Ruhl Savage Street Church of Christ Amen, Connie! Often we want to make things, "either…or" when it should be "both…and"

When I think about Positivity I don't struggle to find Positive position. But let's face it it's so easy to find a negative situation - do you agree it kinda comes naturally?

Today though we are going Rejoice through negativity.

We are going to pray without ceasing and give thanks in all our circumstances.

Jesus’s life was filled with joy. He wanted to impart it to the disciples: This tells me he was a positive thinker. “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete”
    (John 15:11).

Ellen White echoed this theme: We are called to “catch the reflection of the smile of God, and reflect it to others.” I like that!

Positive attitudes manifests in the following ways:

It creates Positive thinking. Constructive thinking.
    Creative thinking.
Optimism. All of this brings joy.

It also gives you the motivation and energy to do things and accomplish goals, as well as an attitude of happiness.

I would like us to try something out - a bit of an exercise!! Think of a negative situation in your life. Often thinking about someone who raises negative thoughts in you is a great choice. Spend some time thinking of the positive things about that person, situation, place, illness etc. Whilst thinking smile and think only good thoughts - negative thoughts are not allowed.

After you have done that pray about the positive thoughts you gleaned from the negative situation/thought. Ask God to remove the negative thoughts from you reframing them for good ones.

Prayer: Father help us to throw negativity and unpleasant thoughts about people, our situations, our issues, and replace with thoughts created by you. Help us to think of eternity and the life we strive for with you . Bless us as we pray and fast removing negativity from our lives. Help us to reposition ourselves positively in all we do today. In Jesus name Amen.

  • Paul DJ Montoya I agree whole heartedly! 👍Religion is man's way of reaching God. Relationship is what Jesus wants with us and is what we need with Him.
  • Nadine I agree, Don
  • John DW Macdonald I am very new to the site but intuitively I say YES - particularly if there are anumber of people who wish to step beyond the people who control what other people think!
  • John DW Macdonald Good discussion. I always liked James when I was at school. He takled sense! For me it is blindingly simnple now. Maybe I have become a fundamentalist!! however this fundamentalism is extrmely different from those who claim to be bible-believeing and say everything they interpret from the bible is "THE WORD OF GOD" My fundamental is how I understand what Jesus said about the Commandments. He said it is 1. Love God. 2. Love Your neighbour as yourself! Acordingly for me it is very simple. ANYTHING which hapls us Love God is beneficial. ANYTHING which helps us 'Love our neighbour as ourself' is simple. This is the litmuis test for 'religious practice'. Personally I have litle time for religious tradions but have to admit as someone who grew up wqith carols and christmas stories and adored Compline I am moved by these. So I know traditional observance casn bring people closer to God. However when it comes to it, we have to ask does it help us LOVE GOD? Does it help us LOVE OUR NEIGHBOUR AS OURSELF? If not it needs to be furnaced! If so it should be included! My views. Comments relished! Love John
  • Michael Snow For 2000 years, the heroes of the faith have known that it is a relilgion AND a relationship. This new 'fad' is a symyptom of the illieteracy of our day. Read the Intro (with the "Look Inside' feature) about the "holy conjunction": AND
  • Jody When a person believes in Christ, he is joined to Him in His death and resurrection (Rom. 6:3–8; Col. 2:12–13; 3:1). Paul reminds the Colossian believers that their priority—their whole outlook on life—is to consistently focus on the resurrected, ascended, and exalted Christ (3:1); to diligently strive and pursue things that are eternal (v. 2); and to continuously put to death whatever belongs to their earthly nature (vv. 3–5). Paul not only lists the practices that should no longer characterize the life of the believer, but he asks followers of Christ to embrace the virtues that should clothe God’s chosen people (vv. 12-17).
  • Dean Our Father, which art in heaven,
    Hallowed be thy Name.
    Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth,
    As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
    And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
    But deliver us from evil.
    For thine is the kingdom,
    The power, and the glory,
    For ever and ever.
  • Tony PSALM 58
1Do you indeed speak righteousness, you silent ones? Do you judge uprightly, you sons of men?
2No, in heart you work wickedness; You weigh out the violence of your hands in the earth.
3The wicked are estranged from the womb; They go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies.
4Their poison is like the poison of a serpent; They are like the deaf cobra that stops its ear,
5Which will not heed the voice of charmers, Charming ever so skillfully.
6Break their teeth in their mouth, O God! Break out the fangs of the young lions, O LORD!
7Let them flow away as waters which run continually; When he bends his bow, Let his arrows be as if cut in pieces.
8Let them be like a snail which melts away as it goes, Like a stillborn child of a woman, that they may not see the sun.
9Before your pots can feel the burning thorns, He shall take them away as with a whirlwind, As in His living and burning wrath.
10The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance; He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked,
11So that men will say, "Surely there is a reward for the righteous; Surely He is God who judges in the earth."
    PSALM 59
1Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; Defend me from those who rise up against me.
2Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, And save me from bloodthirsty men.
3For look, they lie in wait for my life; The mighty gather against me, Not for my transgression nor for my sin, O LORD.
4They run and prepare themselves through no fault of mine. Awake to help me, and behold!
5You therefore, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, Awake to punish all the nations; Do not be merciful to any wicked transgressors.Selah
6At evening they return, They growl like a dog, And go all around the city.
7Indeed, they belch with their mouth; Swords are in their lips; For they say, "Who hears?"
8But You, O LORD, shall laugh at them; You shall have all the nations in derision.
9I will wait for You, O You his Strength; For God is my defense.
10My God of mercy shall come to meet me; God shall let me see my desire on my enemies.
11Do not slay them, lest my people forget; Scatter them by Your power, And bring them down, O Lord our shield.
12For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips, Let them even be taken in their pride, And for the cursing and lying which they speak.
13Consume them in wrath, consume them, That they may not be; And let them know that God rules in Jacob To the ends of the earth.Selah
14And at evening they return, They growl like a dog, And go all around the city.
15They wander up and down for food, And howl if they are not satisfied.
16But I will sing of Your power; Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning; For You have been my defense And refuge in the day of my trouble.
17To You, O my Strength, I will sing praises; For God is my defense, My God of mercy.
  • Kay Elliiott Dating Disabled Amen!
  • Cliff Williams Don...I see what you are saying. It is a good sound bite...but ask someone to explain the difference and they make false distinctions. I have seen this used against Catholics...just another form of pride. Keep it simple, love people as a demonstration of your faith. This is true religion acceptable to God.
