Faith-based Methods For Overcoming Stress

Is it possible to overcome work stress?

Maintaining a spiritual connection is an integral component to developing good mental health habits and negotiating conflicts between ourselves and others. Current research suggests that the health advantages of spirituality are long term: one recent study found that women who went to any kind of religious service regularly had a 33% lower chance of dying within 16 years than their secular peers. However, spirituality also plays a role in overcoming short-term and ongoing health issues, including mental health concerns, as they emerge in our everyday lives.

Confronting Our Stressors

Though they may seem obvious at first, it’s important to address the root causes of your daily stressors, so that you can better understand why you experience stress. For instance, many individuals become angry during cycles, or phases, of high stress, such as when facing a big deadline or travelling constantly for work. During these moments, playing and talking to God plays a fundamental role in helping persons of faith heal from stress and panic. According to many psychiatrists, spirituality is actually a form of preventative medicine, because it helps foster good mental health habits to cope with the onset of negative emotions.

Stressing A Community Focus

Researchers hypothesize that a central reason spirituality positively impacts mental health is because of the community-building emphasis held within churches and other religious services. Going to church provides parishioners with support from their community and affirms a sense of belonging. In fact, one study found that a third of people who go to church every week were ‘extremely satisfied’ with their lives. Of course, not all churchgoers are ‘extremely satisfied’ with their lives and many do, in fact, experience ongoing mental health issues like stress. However, the Church is a form of communal and emotional support for those looking to heal from their distress.

Mindful-Faith Healing

At its most basic level, mindfulness is the practice of staying in touch with your spiritual wellness during everyday life. Though mindfulness has Eastern origins, many Christians and other religious denominations use mindfulness as a tool to talk to God and practice humility. Clinical approaches to treating anxiety with mindfulness are called mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) therapy. MSBR therapy is highly effective: in fact, many studies indicate that MSBR is on par with anti-anxiety medication in lowering levels of stress.  To begin, use your five senses to focus on the present moment instead of the future stressors. Staying focused on your breathing is also a good way to be mindful and steady yourself during times of high stress.

Overcoming mental health issues takes time and contemplation, but spirituality plays a critical role in helping patients understand the root origins of their symptomatic distress. Increasingly, individuals with mental health disorders are turning to their parishes, and in fact their larger communities, for guidance towards a path of healing and reconciliation.

God Teach Me When To Fight

God Teach Me When To Fight

While on the aeroplane yesterday I was thinking about how important time is. If you want to live a life of victory in Christ, you have to be very selective about what you give your time and attention to. You have to recognise which thoughts to ignore, which comments to ignore, and sometimes, which people to ignore. Every “battle” that comes across your path is not a battle that you’re supposed to fight. Some are simply distractions to try to lure you off course. If that battle is not between you and your God-given destiny, it’s a battle you should ignore.

Some people get distracted because they are always trying to straighten everyone else out, or win their approval. But if that’s your focus, you are wasting valuable time and energy that you should be using to pursue your dreams. Turn away from that distraction! You don’t need the approval of everyone around you; you only need God’s approval!

Today, realise you don’t have to fight every battle. You don’t have to straighten people out. You don’t have to pay somebody back. Instead, focus on what matters; focus on God and His Word, so that you can live in freedom, peace and happiness every day of your life!

“Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to Your Word.”

(Psalm 119:37, NIV)?

Pray With Me
Yahweh, thank You for ordering my steps.  Father, thank You for planning good things for me. God, teach me what battles to fight. Help me to discern the things I should ignore. Help me to avoid distractions as I focus my heart and mind on You today, in Jesus’ Name! Amen.

Gospel Lessons From a Grocery Store perspective

I was in a grocery store looking for a particular snack. I couldn’t find it. I had traveled those grocery store aisles for at least 30 minutes.

Moments later a friend of mine who works in the store asked me what I was looking for. I told him and he immediately pointed me in the direction I was supposed to go. I got my snack and was headed to the checkout line when he said, “Rev, all you had to do was look up and you would have seen where it was.” He was right. I looked up and the information was on the signs hung above each aisle.

Then the Spirit spoke to me. I said, “Hold up brotha, you mean to tell me if I had just looked UP I would have found what I was looking for?” He smiled. “Yeah man, if you had just looked UP, you wouldn’t have wandered around for so long looking for what you wanted.

“You mean that sometimes the answers are right there only if I look up? “

“Yes.”

We were laughing because we knew what we were saying, and it wasn’t about snacks. The Gospel has a way of connecting us all. He knew that I knew that’s a powerful Bible lesson. You see, sometimes we spend more time wandering around the aisles of life when all we had to do was look up and we would have been given the answer. However, I did find the provider of that information that directed me to that thought. You see, Christians need to remember that to get to the answers of life, we need to find the provider, and that is Jesus Christ! Psalm 121 confirms this thought. The first two verses say:

  1. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
  2. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth

Look for Jesus. Don’t wander around.  Sometimes if you had just looked up to God, you would have found what you were looking for and would have been on to the next journey.  He has the answers. Just look up!

Stop Procrastinating

Stop Procrastinating

It’s so interesting how easy it is to procrastinate (put things off). We plan on doing something and we have good intentions, but we just keep on putting it off till later. We say, “one day, I’m going to start exercising. One day, I’m going to get my finances in order. One day, I’m going to forgive that person who hurt me.” The problem with this kind of thinking is that “one day” never comes. There will always be some reason to keep delaying it.

Right now, is there something in your heart that you know you need to do? Maybe God has been dealing with you on a particular issue, and you keep putting it off. You think, “as soon as I get through this busy season, then I’ll spend more time with my family. As soon as the price of gas goes down, then I’ll start tithing. As soon as my child gets out of diapers, then I’m going to get my family back in church. As soon as I stop doing bad stuff I’ll get baptised.”

Today, I want to remind us all, good intentions don’t equal obedience. Someone once said the road to destruction is paved with good intentions. The quicker you do what you feel down in your spirit, the happier you’re going to be. Don’t let unfinished business keep you from God’s best. Step out, obey His voice, and walk in the blessings He has for you!

“I made haste, and did not delay to keep Your commandments.”

(Psalm 119:60, NKJV)

Pray With Us
Yahweh, thank You for Your patience and grace towards me. Father, today I rebuke procrastination in my life. Search my heart, show me the way to go. Let  my obedience overtake my good intentions. God, I choose to obey Your voice quickly, and honour You in all that I do, in Jesus’ Name! Amen.

God I’m Ready For My Shift!

God I’m Ready For My Shift!

I declare that a shift is coming in your life and in your circumstances. Whatever you need in your health, in your finances, or in your relationship. It may not look like anything is happening, but we serve a mighty God. He’s about to speak in your direction in a new way!

Like God told the Israelites, the enemies you have seen in the past, or even today, you will see no more. The addictions or bad habits that have held you back can be broken, in Jesus’ Name. God’s favour is being released in a new way that will propel you forward. What should have taken years to accomplish, God is going to do in a split second!

Today, I declare your shift is accelerated in Jesus’ Name. The shift means going beyond where you could go on your own. The shift is seeing Jehovah Jireh, the Lord our Provider, do exceedingly, abundantly, above and beyond. Now, our attitude should be, “God, I’m ready. I’m taking the limits off of You. I’m enlarging my vision. I may not see a way, but I know You have a way. I declare I’m coming into a shift!” Hallelujah!

“You will also declare a thing, and it will be established for you; so light will shine on your ways.”

(Job 22:28, NKJV)

Pray With Me
Yahweh, I open my heart and mind to You. Father, I declare that a supernatural shift is coming my way. God, I receive Your Word, I receive Your truth, and I receive the increase You have in store for me, and today I walk in my declaration, in Jesus’ Name! Amen.

Stop Looking At Your Biceps

Stop Looking At Your Biceps

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”

1 Timothy 4:8

When I was younger, this was presented as the reason why it was okay to work out. It was alright to pump the iron, drink whey protein, and get “jacked” because there was a Bible verse saying so. “For physical training is of some value”, so…do it up!

How I wish I was taught differently. How I wish I knew differently.

I was given the smallest, least important aspect of this Scripture and told to major on it. As a small kid, that messes with you.

I was skinny. I’m still skinny. I wanted anything to be not skinny when I was in school. Not to be “skin and bones” as the white-haired women in the church would call me. When I heard that I was “supposed to” be physically training…I focused on that, worried about that, and thought about only that. Not that I was able to change my skinny-ness.

But I missed out on the spiritual training.

As a teenager, as a young man, a man with energy and unlimited time to spare, I missed out on doing something that had value far beyond my physicality.

The training of the spirit, the development of the spiritual life was underemphasized, made of lesser importance. It was a secondary item in a single sermon, but…here I am, sitting and looking at my arms, disappointed that they aren’t bigger.

Our world continues to focus on physical appearance. How one looks depends on how many likes or followers you get. How someone looks makes all the difference in a job interview. How one looks changes who hangs out with who, where one goes, how one behaves. And sadly, it has infected the church.

Verses such as 1 Timothy 4:8 become “proof-texts”, Scriptures that you can use to make your point more “biblical”. Thus, securing your rightness and letting you continue in that way.

But we have sorely missed the point. We have strayed so far from what is at the heart of God when we start maximizing on minute details. When we major on the first part of that verse and ignore everything that comes after it, we are willfully neglecting that is most important to God.

Yes, physical training is of some value…

“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7

God isn’t that worried about the size of my biceps. God is not as concerned about my body fat index or the number of calories that I have consumed today as we may think he is.

And while taking care of our bodies is important, how much energy have we honestly spent worrying about our spiritual health?

Do we have an app for that on our phones?

Do we have accountability to make sure we don’t…what’s the spiritual equivalent of cheating on our diets?

Do we sacrifice, give up, and otherwise lay down any and all excuses to make God our priority and strive for bigger, better, and bolder in relationship to him? And not our waist sizes?

I can say for myself, I thought about spending time on the rowing machine I have in my basement. Because it’s been a few days and it’s a nice workout.

At no time did prayer, silent and holy time with God enter my mind…until I was convicted to write this.

The church needs to take a step back from the weights, from the mirror, from the keto diets, and whatever other healthy trends we’re caught up in.

We need to remember what God said before he picked the scrawny shepherd boy as the future king of Israel.

We need to remember that our Savior wasn’t a looker, and it wasn’t his appearance that drew the crowds to him (Isaiah 53:2).

We need to remember the whole verse from 1 Timothy 4.

Yes, physical training is good. But there is something of infinite value that you should not be neglecting. Something that you need to be putting more, so much more energy into than your bicep curls, your stomach crunches, and your calorie counts.

The condition of your soul. The substance of your character. The treasures of your heart.

Return To Your First Love Before You Vote

Return To Your First Love Before You Vote

On April 16, I get to vote in a new government. Or vote back in the current government. Obviously, not just me. All of Alberta will put an X on the box corresponding to their political party of choice. They will decide if the New Democratic Party will govern for 4 more years, or if the United Progressive Party will rise to power.

I’ve been having discussion, eaves dropping on Twitter rants and feuds, thinking about the issues and who will best handle them since the writ was dropped.

As Election Day nears, I feel more and more compelled to say this to the Christian Church: Return to your first love.

“To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.

Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.”

Revelation 2:1-4

God had something to say to the church, and it was good and bad.

God knew what they were doing. He knew they were fighting the good fight. They were standing up against evil people, men and women that consistently did what was wrong. They did not put up with fake Christians, confessing one thing but acting another. The church had endured hard times, persecution and trials, all because they had believed in the name of Jesus Christ.

All of that, God was proud of. It was good. He was glad they had stood their ground. The same can be said for many Christians when it comes to election season.

Christians stand up for what they believe matters to God. They want to see children’s’ lives saved, not extinguished by abortions. They want to see kids protected rather than harmed, either by damaging ideologies or practises.

Some Christians stand up for protecting and preserving the Earth. Others get being the poor and the immigrant, citing the Sermon on the Mount as their reason for putting their flag on this issue.

All good things. All worthy causes to stand up for.

But we need to return to your first love before you put a check mark on the ballot.

As Christians, we’ve sworn allegiance to Jesus. Or we claim that we have. We have called up His name for salvation, calling Jesus our Lord and Saviour.

Not the Conservatives. Not the NDP. Not the Liberals. Not some other political party in Canada. (For Americans, the Democrats or Republicans or third parties.)

But it is very easy to get caught up in the political banter and rhetoric and fanfare, and forget our first love. We are to wholeheartedly and unequivocally follow Jesus, not a shade or shape of government.

You might this the Conservatives are the ones that have the best political platform. Maybe the NDP have the programs that will help the next generation best. Perhaps the Liberals have the agenda that will see the Earth saved from climate change.

Great, but none of those political parties, none of their promises or platforms will save you. None of them are the author of our faith or salvation.

Christians increasingly talk as if these political parties were. As if everything, faith, salvation, the second coming of Jesus, all hinged on whom you vote for and who gets elected. That a poorly cast vote could be the damnation that Christianity fears.

We need to stop and do some self-examination.

We need to be very careful with how we go about voting, how we go about talking politics, how we go about as Christians during election season. Because our actions and attitudes, the words we speak and how they are spoken…

I’m seeing less Christians in churches and more advocates for political parties.

Return to your first love, Jesus Christ.

He is the one that called you out of darkness and into the light (1 Peter 2:9).

He is the one that offers life and life more abundantly, more abundantly than NDP, PC, or Liberal can promise (John 10:10).

He is the one that gives us his Spirit, his righteousness, his body for our healing (John 14:26, Isaiah 61:10, Isaiah 53:5)

He is the one who has done so much more for us that we can possibly understand. He is the one that we say we love, we say we serve, we say we obey…

Remember who you love. Return to your first love, our hope and salvation, Jesus Christ.

There are many things that I hope that Jesus says to me when I see him face to face. There are many things I hope he speaks to me by his Holy Spirit. I pray none of them are “Yet I hold this against you…”

Return to your first love before you vote.

Your Hurt For His Healing

Your Hurt For His Healing

As the weekend approaches and you head to your place of worship what will you wear? What about today, what attitude are you wearing? More than your clothes,  what’s covering your mind and emotions? Are you clothed with despair and disappointment? Are you wearing “heaviness?”

Have you gone through a hurtful or disappointing situation? There is a season to grieve a loss. It’s important to go through that process and release the hurt to God. The Bible says God wants to change your mental and spiritual attire and give you a garment of praise, instead of a spirit of heaviness or despair. He wants to exchange your hurt for His healing. He wants to fill you with His peace and joy.

Today, are the garments of yesterday holding you back and weighing you down? Maybe it’s time to exchange that heaviness for His garment of praise. Maybe it’s time to release those heavy burdens. Maybe it’s time to forgive those who have hurt you, and begin to praise your way to victory. When you wear a garment of praise, you’ll stand strong and display His splendour all the days of your life!

“…Provide for those who grieve”¦a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.”

(Isaiah 61:3, NIV)?

Pray With Me
Yahweh, I come to You with an open and humble heart. Father, I ask that You take my garments of despair and heaviness. Make me new today. God, take my hurt and give me your healing, give me a garment of praise today and have Your way in my life, in Jesus’ Name! Amen.

Trust God’s Timing

Trust God’s Timing

Have you been praying for something and it’s taking longer than you expected? No matter how long you’ve been praying or standing on God’s promises, don’t give up! Your time is coming. Your harvest is on its way. It might be today, it might be tomorrow, it might be next week, next month or next year; but remember, based on today’s Scripture, at just the right time you will get your breakthrough.

Be encouraged because God is faithful and His promises are true. So keep standing, keep hoping, keep believing. Keep doing good. Keep declaring the promises of God over your life.

Today, choose to be around people who are going to encourage you and fill your heart and mind with God’s Word. Give God praise continually. Press on in faith and keep an attitude of victory. Don’t get tired of doing what is right, because your harvest of blessing is on the way – trust God’s timing!

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”

(Galatians 6:9, NLT)

Pray With Me
Yahweh, thank You for Your goodness and faithfulness in my life. Father, thank You for refreshing and renewing my heart. Please, fill me with Your peace and Your strength. God, help me to do good and hold on until I see my harvest of blessing, in Jesus’ Name! Amen.

God’s Favour Equals Success

God's Favour Equals Success

Success in this life isn’t necessarily about how much money, or influence or education someone has. Success is about living a life of excellence in obedience to God’s Word. When we step out to do what God has called us to do, Scripture says that His favour surrounds us like a shield. When we have His favour, we have everything; we have an advantage for success!

Favour opens doors. Favour will bring good breaks. The favour of God will cause you to accomplish what you could not accomplish on your own. It gives you an edge. Now, if you’re going to see the gracious hand of God at work in your life, you can’t go through the day feeling intimidated, thinking that you’re average, looking around and comparing yourself to everyone else.

Today, you have to live like you have His favour, think like you have favour, talk like you have favour, walk like you have favour, dress like you have favour! Not arrogantly. Not in a way that portrays that you’re better than somebody else, but with quiet humility and confidence, knowing that you have the gracious hand of God on your life! Live like you’ve got it because you do! Hallelujah!

His favour lasts a lifetime

(Psalm 30:5, NIV)?

Pray With Me
Yahweh, thank You for Your grace, favour and mercy upon my life. Father, I praise You today because You are good. I receive Your truth by faith and rise up to walk in my calling. God, I know that You are going before me to prepare the way, as I walk in Your favour all the days of my life, in Jesus’ Name! Amen.

Freedom… As Long AS You’re Not Christian

Christian values and beliefs have come under fire for centuries, but our present times have seen such opposition that can have a person’s head reeling from the forceful nature of it. We have been told that it is okay to believe, as long as your beliefs do not go against the ruling beliefs of the age.

People can speak easily of their rights, in fact, it falls off their tongues at the drop of a hat. You have the freedom of speech, freedom to follow your own beliefs, and the list goes on. However, as soon as a Christian exercises their rights in certain (most)  respects, they receive opposition that can often be violent if you’re not vigilant. Of course, we are well aware that we will suffer as Jesus suffered if indeed we are His, but I wonder if people stop to think about what they are saying and accusing us of before they actually retaliate with some words or even fists?

This ‘topic’ circulated in my head after I came across news concerning Chick-fil-A, the popular American food franchise. There is apparently some controversy involving a report from the liberal  outlet ThinkProgress that states the Chick-fil-A Foundation gave $1.8 million to three organisations “with a record of anti-LGBTQ discrimination.” The organisations and the donations given were:

  • $1,653,416 to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes
  • $6,000 to the Paul Anderson Youth Home
  • $150,000 to the Salvation Army

ThinkProgress says that the Fellowship of Christian Athletes “seeks to spread an anti-LGBTQ message to college athletes and requires a strict ‘sexual purity’ policy for its employees that bars any ‘homosexual acts.’” The most controversial bit of the liberal outlet is that the Paul Anderson Youth Home (a centre for troubled teens) allegedly says that same-sex marriage is “rage against Jesus Christ and His values.”

Most of the Foundation’s money actually went to mainstream Christian organisations, but as with all things media, this was just an attempt to demonise the company because it is Christian. Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy once said that we’re “inviting GOD’S judgement on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say we know better than You as to what constitutes a marriage.” Needless to say, the media had a field day with that!

Okay, first of all, Chick-fil-A is a Christian company which means that they operate according to Christian values whether it is in business or giving. Secondly, they have the right to give to whoever they feel like giving the money to, right? But as it does not fit the criteria of ThinkProgress, then it’s wrong?

That logic is flawed, nitpicking at best. They are complaining about Christians being Christian, where’s the sense in that? It is no secret that we believe that homosexuality is wrong, that same-sex marriage is wrong, and that sexual purity is essential for all Christians.

I do not see it as discrimination, but obedience to GOD’S Word, but of course, people will twist, harp on, demonise, and fight everything to do with the Almighty because they believe the lies of the devil.

I give Chick-fil-A a high five for sticking to Christian values, even amid much opposition from the media. So many people have crumbled under the pressure to conform, but they seem to be doing all right for themselves. Plus, I hear that their food is delicious, so a Chick-fil-A experience is definitely on my bucket list!

If You Only Believe

If You Only Believe

My little daughter is very sick. She is close to death. Will You come to my home and pray for her? These were the words of a sad father in Scripture. Jesus said yes, but along the way He kept getting stopped, one interruption after another. Finally, word came back to Him saying, “no need to come. The little girl has died.

They were upset and very distraught. But Jesus said to them, “don’t be afraid, only believe. The little girl will be well.” Notice the phrase, “only believe.” Jesus went to the home, laid hands on the little girl, and she came back to life.

Today, does your situation seem impossible? In the natural, you don’t see how you can get well, or how you can overcome the addiction, or how your family can ever be restored. God is saying to you what He said to them, “if you only believe, I will turn the situation around. If you only believe, breakthroughs are headed your way!”

But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, ‘do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.

(Luke 8:50, NKJV)?

Pray With Me
Yahweh, thank You for Your hand of victory upon my life. Father, thank You for making a way even when there seems to be no way, despite my unbelief at times. God, I choose to stand in faith. I choose to believe, knowing that You are ready, willing and able to cause me to overcome in this life, in Jesus’ Name! Amen.

Move Forward

A Letter to YOU from the Devil

What was your past like? Have you made a decision to forget the negative things of your past? Many people don’t fully understand what that means. They wonder, “how can I forget something that’s happened to me?” But one definition of the word forget is to disregard intentionally, or to overlook. In other words, you have to choose to disregard your past so that it doesn’t keep you from moving forward. That could mean the good and the bad.

Sometimes our past victories keep us from rising higher as much as past failures. Sometimes if we don’t let go of the old, we’ll never be able to embrace the new. It doesn’t matter what’s happened in your history, it’s time to forget what lies behind and live in the present – live forward.

Today, make the choice to move forward. Trust that God has a better future in store for you. Trust that He’s working on your behalf. As you forget what lies behind and press forward, you’ll automatically move forward. You’ll see increase and blessing, and live the abundant life He has in store for you with excitement and vitality!

“I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead”

(Philippians 3:13, NLT)

Pray With Me
Yahweh, today I choose to move beyond my past. Father, I don’t want anything to hold me back from what You have in store for my future. I choose forgiveness and peace. God, help me, by Your Spirit, to press forward into the life of blessings and excitement You have in store for me, in Jesus’ Name! Amen.

Why I Would Never Choose Invisibility as my Superpower?

“One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer–at three in the afternoon. Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!”

(Acts 3:1-3)

It may sound like a typical nerdy question when you ask someone, “If you could have any superpower you wanted, what would it be?” I’ve asked this question so many times to young adults as like an ice-breaker to get a conversation going. And the superpower that most of them have said is – INVISIBILITY. But why this superpower out of all them?

I had a careful think about this question this week after I watched the first Guardians of the Galaxy. And I came to a possible conclusion. No one can see you. You’re there but not there. You could be in the same room with someone, standing inches away from them and they would never realise it. If they wanted to, they could reach out and touch you – but why would they? They wouldn’t know you were there! You could do tons of random acts of kindness, but no one would see you and it would look like magic. But you could also abuse it… it would be very easy to rob a bank and be totally unnoticed.

In movies, invisibility is portrayed as this awesome superpower where the superhero can disappear to protect themselves from getting hurt, reappearing on the other side of the room completely unharmed. But imagine if that character was always invisible. How could they connect with anyone? How could they make friends? How could they live a happy life if no one could ever see them? The answer is they wouldn’t. The only reason this superpower is cool in films, is that it can be turned on and off whenever the superhero wants it to. It may be fun to not be seen every so often, but I assure you that a whole life of invisibility is no superpower at all.

To BE invisible in movies = POWER

To FEEL invisible in life = PAIN

What does the Bible say?

This blog post all stemmed from a Bible passage I had read last week, being Acts 3:1-3, which talked about an invisible beggar. Consider a few things about life for this man. He was lame; couldn’t walk or stand. What this really meant was he sat on the floor ever single day, begging for small change. All day. It also reminded me of a homeless person sat outside Sainsburys. Everyday tons of people walk past them and ignore them, not even offering them a smile, pretending that they don’t exist. A smile can do so much more than people realise. A person once taught me to never ignore a homeless person, they are still human beings. If you are asked for money and don’t have any, to acknowledge their presence, politely say no thanks and smile. In this passage, this guy was treated as invisible constantly.

I think many of us can relate to this beggar more than we think we do. We aren’t homeless or lame but we can feel invisible. Sometimes it can self-inflicted – we try to be invisible to cope with out own thoughts, feelings and emotions. But being invisible can leave us sad and upset. I know too well. I am quite a shy, introverted guy who likes to keep things to myself, avoiding confrontation. So staying invisible sometimes works for me. But being invisible all the time doesn’t. I have hid myself away in the past at the lowest points, thinking that it’s been the best for myself when really I had needed to be visible. A feeling of community when times have been tough.

How can I take off my cloak of invisibility?

What can I do? Why should I live as a visible person? Once we look up like the beggar did in Acts, we’ll be more sensitive to the people with their heads still down. We’ll get the opportunity to be like Peter and John and engage with the downcast. This is a whole life thing, whether you are in school or work, at the supermarket, or even walking down the street…And this is why I would never choose invisibility as my superpower!

My Present Help

Today’s verse is taken from a time in my life when I got arrested and felt all alone, but the thought that God was always with me was comforting. It means He is present at all times – continually, perpetually, throughout all time. In your day of trouble, He promises to be a help to you.

You may ask How is He your help? “Help” means something different to each person. That’s because “help” is specific to your need. If you need money to pay your bills, a chocolate cake isn’t going to be much help! But, we serve a God who is very specific. And because He is always with you, He always knows exactly what you need and is always ready to provide it!

Today, as trouble and adversity come your way, know that God is with you. Trust that He has the answer, and that He is working things out. As you continue to believe Him and follow His direction, He will lead you in the way that you should go. He will comfort you, revive you, restore you and bless you! He will be your ever-present help, because He is forever faithful to His promise!

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

(Psalm 46:1, NIV)

Pray With Me
Yahweh, thank You for being my ever-present help during some tough times. Father, I trust today that You will comfort me and restore my soul. God, I lift my eyes to You this day. Help me to follow Your commands and honour You, as You direct my steps and lead me out of trouble, in Jesus’ Name! Amen.

Are You Fed Up? – Encouragement for Today

I share this for somebody who woke up, fed up, messed up and tired. I am sharing this for you who feel as if nothing you do, works and no matter how you pray, you cannot seem to get ahead. You’re staring at your vision board and the anger coursing through you, wants to rip it up. You’re reading over your book, for the tenth time, and it still doesn’t feel right. You’re counting the ticket sales, of your event, and they’re still at the same low as when you counted them ten minutes ago. You’ve paid for advertisements, you’ve shared the plans, you’ve spent the money and still nothing. You stepped out on faith and the enemy wants to make you believe, it was a mistake. You’ve given up the alcohol and now you’re contemplating taking one drink. You’ve deleted all the folk in your phone but the mindset, you’re currently in, has you thinking about calling somebody to take the pain away; only if it is temporary. Don’t do it. Don’t give up. Don’t throw in the towel. Don’t stop believing in the purpose God has placed the inside of you. Why not? Because I’m praying for you.

And beloved, my prayer for you today is simple ”¦ As you stand under an open Heaven, may you receive a fresh wind of anointing that shall hit your house, so heavy the windows shake. May the grace of a living God, saturate you like you’ve been caught in the thunderstorm without an umbrella. May God’s will for your life, be so clear, you’ll think it’s your new glasses when it’s all God.

May this week be the beginning of everything your faith has worked for. May God show up, in your life, so fast and on time, it’ll have you speaking in tongue; for the first time. May God allow the blessing, only He could perform, be so big that it’ll feel like an earthquake that shifted your house. May this minute, for all that are in your rightful place, be your last minute of minimum.

May this Monday, be the last Monday you find yourself missing out. May this be your last memory of having to ask people to borrow. May this be your last time going to bed hungry, unless it’s by choice. May this be your last time ever thinking God doesn’t hear the cry of the righteous. May this be the moment you walk, boldly, into the open door of your harvest. I’m praying for you, my brother and my sister because there shall be no soul left behind.

But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.
